SunStar Publishing, Incorporated manages Sun.Star Cebu and the website sunstar.com.ph. Other Sun.Star papers in different provinces are managed by different companies and executives, but Sun.Star Cebu president Julius Neri sits on every board as chairman.
Aside from Cebu, Sun.Star prints in Bacolod, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Pampanga. Meanwhile, it has online publications in Manila, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Pangasinan and Zamboanga.
Only Sun.Star Baguio and Pangasinan have records in the Securities and Exchange Commission, but the two companies’ latest General Information Sheets date back to 2007 and 2001, respectively.
Sun.Star Publishing, Inc. also publishes SuperBalita, a tabloid in Bisaya language, in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.
Despite today’s technology, Neri said print still generates more revenue in advertising compared to online.
“There are many, many more options online than in print, so (there are a lot of) competitors online and also the landscape is changing: what kind of ads are effective, how do you target the proper market,” Neri said in mixed English and Filipino.
Sun.Star is addressing what the national broadsheets lack: they provide news from the provinces. “I don’t think the...so-called national papers are really national because they are really papers of the National Capital Region and some news about the province,” he said.
Among the audience of Sun.Star, Neri said, are overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“All over the world may Pilipino, ‘di ba? So other than being Filipino, kung OFW ka, Cebuano ka, or Davaoeno, Pampangueno, whatever (There are Filipinos all over the world. Other than being Filipino, you also come from different provinces. You can be a Cebuano, Davaoeno or Pampangueno, whatever),” Neri said.
If you are from Cebu, Neri added, why would you care if a congressman in Quezon City pocketed public funds? People would rather know what happened in the Sinulog festival.
“We’re catering to specific communities,” he added.
SunStar Publishing, Incorporated is owned by Armson Corporation, a holding company owned by the elite Garcia clan in Cebu with 30 percent shares. Meanwhile, 27 percent shares are owned by White Gold, Inc., a company of the Gaisano clan, who also owns Gaisano Malls.
