The Duavit Family

Gilberto M. Duavit Sr. is one of the three men credited for the success of GMA Network Incorporated together with Felipe L. Gozon and Menardo Jimenez.
Duavit Sr. was the chairman of the Republic Broadcasting System (RBS) in 1974, a television station owned by an American Robert La Rue Stewart and the precursor of GMA Network Incorporated.
In 1975, Duavit Sr. together with his friends Gozon and Jimenez took control of the management of RBS which was then losing money. He was the founding chairman of GMA Network Incorporated. Under their wings, the station consistently made money and started its steady rise as the main competitor to the top of the Philippine media market.
A lawyer by profession, Duavit Sr. earned his law degree from the University of the East. He was one of President Ferdinand Marcos’ presidential assistants and helped draft the 1973 Constitution as a delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention.
The same Constitution prohibited foreign ownership and management of media networks.
He was also an elected government official, having served as Representative of the First District of Rizal in the 9th, 10th, and 11th Congresses.
In 2000, Duavit Sr. and Gozon engineered a coup among the network’s board and installed Gozon as chairman, president and chief executive officer while Duavit Sr.’s son and namesake Gilberto Duavit Jr. was elected executive vice president and chief operating officer.
In July 2007, in a bid to stop GMA’s public offering, Imee R. Marcos, the daughter of former President Marcos, claimed ownership of the Duavits’ 28.35 percent of GMA Network Incorporated. She claimed that Marcos had just entrusted his ownership of GMA to Duavit Sr. in 1983.
In 2010, Duavit Jr. was elected by the board as the network’s president, taking over the position from Gozon.
In 2015, another Duavit, Michael John R. Duavit, was elected to GMA Network, Incorporated’s Board of Directors. Before that, he had served as the elected representative of the First District of Rizal from 2001, when his father Duavit Sr. could no longer run for reelection, up to 2010.
In 2016 Michael John R. Duavit left his directorship of GMA and ran again for Congress. In July 2016 Duavit Sr. was named director of the network.
