A2Z
A2Z is a Philippine free-to-air broadcast television network. It is a joint-venture partnership between ZOE Broadcasting Network, Inc. and ABS-CBN Corporation, through a block time agreement, with the latter serving as the main content provider.
The network’s name is an abbreviation derived from the first letter of the two companies’ names - ABS-CBN and ZOE - plus the long-time channel (2) assigned to the Lopez-owned network before the Philippine Congress rejected its franchise renewal in July 2020.
ZOE is the broadcast media arm of the Jesus Is Lord (JIL) Church, founded and headed by evangelist Eduardo “Bro. Eddie” Villanueva. It operates a network of television and radio stations in Mega Manila, Baguio, Bacolod, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, and Puerto Princesa in Palawan.
Before the partnership and rebranding to A2Z Channel 11 in October 2020, ZOE had a lease agreement with a subsidiary of GMA Network Inc. for an entire TV airtime block, which ended in 2019.
In 2017, there were reportedly talks between the two companies for the lease or acquisition of ZOE by ABS-CBN, in case issues were brought up against the latter and its franchise renewal application was denied.
Aside from A2Z, ZOE also owns and operates Light TV on Channel 33, described as a Christian, family-oriented, and wholesome television station, which mostly airs programs with a religious format, but with its own news programs.
The early programming schedule of A2Z is also aired on Light TV. The majority of its programs are produced by ABS-CBN, which includes entertainment and talk shows, news, drama series, and movies.
Documents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) show that JIL’s three foundations namely Jesus is Lord Colleges Foundation, Inc., Jesus is Lord Church Worldwide Missions Foundation, Inc. and Jesus The Healer Foundation Inc. owns 90% of ZOE, while Villanueva only has a 2.5% stake. However, the General Information Sheet (GIS) of these foundations from the SEC shows that all these are majority-owned by Villanueva.
