CNN Philippines is a new player in the Philippine TV market. It began broadcasting on March 16, 2015. It is an all news-and-current affairs channel broadcasting on VHF. Though it airs on free-to-air television, the programs are mostly in English.
CNN Philippines is owned and operated by Nine Media Corporation, which is 100-percent owned by JRLT-JHI Corporation, a financial holding company. Listed among its stockholders are Ferdinan C. Chua and Antonio L. Cabangon-Chua, the owner of the ALC Group of Companies, a conglomerate engaged in various business activities, such as insurance protection, media, pre-need assurance, automotive, banking and finance, security, education, hotels, and real estate.
The channel had 0.45 audience share based on Nielsen National Urban TV Audience Measurement from Jan. to June 2016.
CNN Philippines is connected with US-based media company Turner Broadcasting Company, a division of Time Warner. It uses the branding of CNN and airs CNN’s international news coverage and current programs on free TV and produces reports on the Philippines for CNN.
The network airs in what used to be RPN 9. RPN or Radio Philippines Network is one of the Philippine government’s three TV stations. It was privatized in 2011 but the Philippine government retained 20-percent ownership of the channel.
