DZRV 846 (Radio Veritas)
DZRV 846 (Radio Veritas) is the AM radio station of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila. It is the second faith-based station on the AM band in Mega Manila with a significant audience share.
Nielsen’s Mega Manila Radio Audience Measurement ranked it fifth among all AM stations in Mega Manila, with 5.68% audience share from April to June 2023.
The 24-hour Catholic-run station mostly airs programs centered on spreading the values of the Roman Catholic church. At the same time, it airs regular news of concern to the general public, as well as updates about the Catholic church and its affiliated organizations. It also produces talk shows and religious programs.
Radio Veritas, founded in 1969 as part of the Philippine-based continental radio network Radio Veritas Asia, is controlled by the Catholic church through the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila, which owns 74.615% of the Radio Veritas Global Broadcasting System, Inc.
In 1991, it became a stand-alone radio station when it severed ties with Radio Veritas Asia to pursue commercial operations. It also changed its name to DZNN but reverted back to DZRV in 1997.
During the dark days of the martial rule of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., whose namesake son is the incumbent Philippine president, Radio Veritas was instrumental in reaching out to the Filipino masses to rise against tyranny.
During the 1986 People Power Revolution that led to the overthrow of Marcos, Sr., Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin used the station to call on Filipinos to support military rebels.
Its dedicated coverage “in using truth to depose an oppressive and corrupt regime and restore Filipino faith in the electoral process” was recognized with an award from the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Foundation.
Amid the surge of COVID-19 cases, the station was among the media outlets whose operations were affected. On April 14, 2021, operations were relocated to Bulacan after its main studio in Quezon City was on lockdown for 15 days after members of the staff got COVID.
Aside from radio, Radio Veritas is available via livestream on YouTube and Facebook. For example, its 30-minute news program Veritas Balita at 5:30 a.m. is simultaneously broadcast online, on cable television including Cignal Cable TV and Sky Cable, and set-top digital boxes ABS CBN TV plus and GMA Affordabox.
However, the station has faced attacks online. Its original website was hacked and defaced in 2012, allegedly because of the Church’s strong opposition to the reproductive health bill, which eventually became a law.
Recently, in January 2023, its YouTube channel was hacked, interrupting the live streaming of its programs.
At present, Radio Veritas is operated by Radio Veritas Global Broadcasting System, Inc., which is under the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manila. Its main shareholders are Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, Jr, by virtue of his appointed position, with 74.615% ownership, Australian Manuel Gonzales with a 13.420% stake, business tycoon Antonio O. Cojuangco with 11.542% shares, and Eric S. Canoy, president of Radio Mindanao Network, Inc. with 0.008% shares.
