Pilipino Star Ngayon

Pilipino Star Ngayon, a Tagalog-language daily tabloid, first came out on March 17, 1986, with the aim to provide news to the masses at a more affordable cost. It prides itself as an intelligent alternative for its Filipino readers expressed through its slogan “Dyaryong Disente para sa Masang Intelihente” (The Decent Newspaper for the Intelligent Masses).

Founded by the Belmonte matriarch Betty Go-Belmonte shortly after the February 1986 People Power Revolution that ousted strongman Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., the newspaper was the precursor of the English daily The Philippine Star, also founded by Go-Belmonte, with Max Soliven and Art Borjal. The three were members of the so-called “Mosquito Press” during the Marcos dictatorship.

Aside from its daily serving of news and entertainment, the tabloid is a hit among readers due to its popular columnists, “dyaryo-seryes” (newspaper series), and Libangan (leisure) pages. Nielsen’s 2023 Q2 Report ranked it the most-read Filipino-language tabloid for that period.

Riding on the online bandwagon, it now also airs entertainment shows on its Facebook and YouTube pages.

Today, Pilipino Star Ngayon, Inc. is majority-owned by Hastings Holdings, Inc.(80%), one of the holding companies headed by business mogul Manuel V. Pangilinan, along with The Philippine Star. Its parent company is PLDT’s media arm, MediaQuest Holdings, Inc.

The remaining 20% of shares still belong to the Belmonte family, with former House Speaker, Feliciano; Jr., STAR Group president and CEO, Miguel; Philippine Star head of editorial board, Isaac; Philstar Global CEO, Kevin; and Quezon City Mayor, Joy, each with a 4% stake.
