The Manila Times Online

The Manila Times Online is the online website of The Manila Times, one of the oldest English-language newspapers in the Philippines founded on October 11, 1898. In the article titled “History of The Manila Times,” Luis Serrano wrote that the publication was established after news of the breakdown of the Paris Conference. This signaled the transfer of the Philippines from Spanish to American rule.

Thomas Gowan, an Englishman, set up Manila Times to fill the demand of the United States forces for an American newspaper in Manila.

Filipino journalists started to join the former all-American staff of the Manila Times in 1918, including Maria Kalaw-Katigbak, Jose P. Bautista, Jose Luna Castro, Luis Serrano, Benjamin Osias, Jose L. Guevara, Estrella Alfon, Cita Trinidad, Consuelo G. Abaya, Carlos P. Romulo, and Benigno Aquino Jr.

After the Second World War, heirs of Don Alejandro Roces Sr. reopened the paper in 1945. With its top-notch reporting, it was the number one in the vibrant media industry until it was forced to close down when martial law was imposed in September 1972. It remained shut for the next 14 years until the Roces family revived the newspaper company on February 5, 1986. Three years after its rebirth the paper again had to close down.

Citing financial dearth, the Roces family sold the paper to business tycoon John Gokongwei. In 1999, the paper faced a libel suit amounting to PhP101 million (around US$2.608 million in 1999)from then-president Erap Estrada after publishing a story calling him an “unwitting godfather” to a controversial deal of the government with an Argentinian energy company. The Gokongweis were forced to apologize and eventually decided to get out of the newspaper business.

The paper again closed on July 23, 1999. But months before it ceased operating, Mark Jimenez, a crony of Joseph Estrada, was said to have shown interest in buying the publication but wanted to remain an undisclosed partner.

Dante Ang Sr. acquired The Manila Times on Aug. 8, 2001, taking on the role of publisher and chairman. He is known in the media industry as a public relations practitioner. His most famous client was Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who became president in 2001

He published a business magazine, Money Asia, and founded the Filipino-language broadsheet, Kabayan. He also runs five publishing houses and serves as president and chair of a public relations firm, with mostly corporate clients.

The Manila Times is one of the first Philippine newspapers to develop an Internet edition. Today, the Manila Times has adopted a paywall for readers to access its content online.

The Manila Times’ new management is headed by Ang Sr.'s son, Dante “Klink” Ang II, who serves as the paper’s President and CEO and Executive Editor.

Based on Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2023 DNR, The Manila Times Online ranked 14th as the top news website in the Philippines.
