Far East Broadcasting Company (Philippines), Inc.

Far East Broadcasting Company (Philippines), Inc.

Far East Broadcasting Company (Philippines), Inc., founded by American missionaries, is a nonprofit, noncommercial Christian network of radio stations operating in the Philippines. Its primary objective is to spread Christianity in Asia. The network, with its main headquarters in California, USA, primarily subsists on grants shared among affiliates throughout Asia, and donations directly given to each country affiliate.

Like all affiliate networks, a Board of Trustees oversees the Philippine-based company, governed by a local board of directors, aside from an international leader for the country. Luis Miguel V. Castillo serves as leader or chief operating officer (COO) for the Philippines. All trustees are church leaders. In June 2023, Castillo took over as president from Dan Andrew Cura. There has been no announcement who takes over as COO.

FEBC, USA, which is similar to a ‘parent’ company in for profit organizations, is headed by Edward W. Cannon, as president and CEO. Several programs aired on the radio network are produced from the main office studios in California for airing in its country affiliates. Local leaders are in charge of controlling and managing the organization’s operations policies and guidelines.

The Christian broadcasting network secured its first franchise to build and operate a radio station in the country in 1946. Its current operations are backed by a renewed franchise that took effect in 2021 through Republic Act 10819.

While China was the initial intended audience in Asia, the plan fell through after communism shut down mission work. The Philippines was more than willing to host the radio operations and radio station KZAS, as it was first known, made their first broadcast on June 4, 1948.

FEBC currently owns 10 AM and FM stations in the Philippines with international broadcast reach in China and parts of Southeast Asia.

Because the company relies on donations and grants for its operations and takes its stewardship responsibility seriously, FEBC makes publicly available its independent auditor reports and other forms pertaining to finances for fiscal transparency.

It has also made it a point to be a member of accrediting agencies, which set standards for operations of programs and organizations, as part of their policy of transparency.

Affiliated Interests Founder

John C. Broger, Robert H.Bowman, and William J. Roberts

were American missionaries who founded FEBC in California.

They initially planned to expand their broadcast operations in Asia by setting up their broadcast base in China but were compelled to go to the Philippines instead after the country “closed doors” to American missionaries because of Communism.

In 1946, the founders secured a franchise and found a facility in Valenzuela for their operations.

In 1948, their flagship station was able to air its first broadcast.

The station had the support of former president Carlos P. Garcia who inaugurated their transmitter in Bulacan in 1960. Garcia said the role of the Americans was important in planting and sowing the seeds of democracy and freedom in the region through the Philippines.
