The Manila Broadcasting Company, which changed its brand name into MBC Media Group on Feb. 6, 2024, operates the Philippines’ oldest commercial radio station, DZRH.
It is home to top radio stations in Mega Manila as of the second quarter of 2023. DZRH is the second leading AM station with 29.64% audience share, while 90.7 Love Radio is the second leading FM station with 16.69%. Meanwhile, 101.1 Yes! The Best recorded 5.69% and 96.3 Easy Rock with 3.47% as the fifth and sixth top FM stations in Mega Manila, respectively.
It also operates the pay television DZRH News Television.
In 2022, MBC declared PhP1,218,032,361 (around US$21.430 million) as revenue from advertisements, digital services and talent fees. The revenues also include earnings from hotel accommodations of its subsidiaries Elizalde Hotels and Resorts, Inc. and Feliz Hotel Boracay, Inc.
Its parent company, Elizalde Holdings Corporation, is also into enterprises involved in various non-media businesses such as real estate, hotels, motels, clubs, resorts, amusements centers, clubs, productions, events and advertising.
During the rebuild of the Philippines after the Second World War, the Elizalde brothers led by Joaquin Miguel and Manuel founded the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) on June 8, 1946. Betrand H. Silen, the station manager of KZRH (former name of DZRH) helped the brothers purchase radio equipment from the New York-based National Broadcasting Company.
Since then, MBC has expanded its broadcasting operations, which now includes pay/cable television and live streaming of radio shows, and introduced innovative solutions for its advertisers such as organizing special events to maximize their exposure. It also acquired companies involved in hotels and resorts management.
At present, it owns six radio brands which include one AM (DZRH Nationwide 666) and three FM stations (Love Radio, Yes! The Best, and Easy Rock) in Metro Manila. The stations now have nationwide reach with 18 relay stations in the provinces for DZRH; 11 for Yes! The Best; seven for Easy Rock station; and 26 for Love Radio.
It also expanded its provincial reach with 10 stations under the Aksyon Radyo network, which operates in key provincial cities such as Iloilo and Bacolod, and 151 stations under the Radyo Natin network, which operates community radio stations.
Not even the fire that gutted its headquarters in Pasay City in 2019 stopped the MBC from broadcasting in the last 77 years, except for a few months during the martial law and the temporary suspension of its regular programming during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The company is expected to continue broadcasting following the renewal for another 25 years of its legislative franchise in 2018.
Currently, MBC is under the Elizalde Holdings Corporation (EHC), a conglomerate of 22 companies headed by Federico “Fred” J. Elizalde. EHC and its subsidiaries, including the trust for the Elizalde children, owns 89.74% of the company. It also reported a 10.23% public ownership as a listed company in the Philippine Stock Exchange since October 1949.
