Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company
The Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company Incorporated is one of the country’s top telecommunications provider. It provides wireless and fixed line services, among others, with the former generating most of its revenue, which was reported to be P 171 billion in 2015.
Among its wireless services are cellular and broadband. Smart Communications and Sun Cellular, in fact, is wholly-owned by PLDT.
Its other interests include power generation through PLDT Communications Energy Ventures (PCEV), a holding company which has 17.48 percent shares in Meralco. Mediaquest Holdings, on the other hand, is the media arm of PLDT. Under it is at least one outlet in television, radio, print and online. Among these are leading media outlets such as the TV 5 Network, The Philippine Star group, Radyo Singko and Interaksyon.
According to Rigoberto Tiglao’s book Colossal Deception, PLDT is eventually owned by Indonesian tycoon Anthoni Salim through First Pacific Company Limited.
Business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan have been part of PLDT as early as 1998, serving as one of its directors. He has been chairman of the board, as well as president and chief executive officer since February 2004 and December 2015, respectively.
In November 2016, it has announced its call for a new president which will hopefully be named no later than 2018.
The franchise of PLDT is set to expire in 2028.
