Prage Management Corporation

Prage Management Corporation

Before it took over as owner of popular tabloids Abante and Abante Tonite from Amado Macasaet’s Monica Publishing Corporation in 2018, start-up venture Prage Management Corporation already entered into a management contract to run the two papers in 2017.

Registered as a corporation in 2018, Prage’s ownership is equally divided between its founders, Renato M. Marfil and Gil C. Cabacungan, Jr., who were long-time reporters before venturing into newspaper publishing.

In the second quarter of 2023, Nielsen’s Consumer & Media View ranked Abante sixth, and its sister-publication Abante Tonite, ninth, among the Top 10 newspapers, a testament to their longevity in the news industry and popularity among readers.

Under its management, Prage was able to grow its media portfolio, which aside from the two older tabloids, now includes NewsKO. It has also put up several news websites among them Abante TNT, Bilyonaryo, Politiko, Fastbreak, and Abogado. Their media enterprise has extended to operating an online radio station, Radyo Tabloidista, entertainment publication Celeb Radar, and video production through Teletabloidista.

Cabacungan was a senior reporter for the national broadsheet Philippine Daily Inquirer, while Marfil who started as reporter with Abante, then as columnist, served as communications assistant secretary and later undersecretary during the administration of the late president Benigno Aquino III, between 2010 to 2016.

Among its goals is to expand operations not just in the Philippines but around the world “while maintaining a high standard of integrity and quality in journalism” through its online arm, abante.com.ph.

Its success, measured in revenues, is unknown because Prage’s financial documents are not available on the eSearch and SEC Express platforms of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
