ZOE Broadcasting Network, Inc.
ZOE Broadcasting Network Inc. is the media arm of the Jesus Is Lord Church. Eduardo “Bro. Eddie” C. Villanueva, who founded the church, started the network.
ZOE operates A2Z Channel 11, a joint-venture partnership between ZOE TV and ABS-CBN Corporation through a blocktime agreement. It also operates Light TV Channel 33 - God's Channel of Blessings, which provides entertainment and religious programming to Philippine households.
The frequency rights of Channel 11 were given as a joint venture of two influential religious groups in the 1990s. These are El Shaddai, a Catholic charismatic movement headed by Mike Velarde, and Jesus Is Lord Church (JIL), an evangelical Protestant group headed by Bro. Eddie. Later on, the two groups began contesting full ownership of the station as conflict of interest grew between the two. To address the matter, the Philippine Congress intervened and awarded Villanueva the right to acquire channel 11.
In 2004, Villanueva resigned as the company's chair to run for the presidency. After ending last in the election results, Villanueva returned to ZOE and continued his appearance on various ZOE TV programs.
In April 2005, ZOE entered into an agreement with Citynet Network Marketing and Productions, Inc., a subsidiary of GMA Network, Inc., to lease the entire TV airtime block of the station in exchange for upgrading ZOE TV's facilities and for distributing its in-house programs to GMA Network.
On September 1, 2005, channel 11 quietly went off the air as GMA rehabilitated the transmitter and studios of ZOE TV. On November 11, 2005, after a series of test broadcasts, GMA Network finally handled master control operations of channel 11 and launched their new second TV network through ZOE TV, QTV (Quality TeleVision), an all-female lifestyle channel later renamed Q on March 18, 2007. It was then reformatted as the news and public affairs channel GMA News TV (now GTV) on February 28, 2011.
On March 1, 2011, after channel 11 was relaunched as GMA News TV, channel 33 was rebranded as Light TV 33, introducing new programs mostly dedicated to religious formats.
On April 24, 2019, GMA Network (through Citynet Network Marketing and Productions) announced the termination of their block time agreement with ZOE Broadcasting. The split came after the release of GMA's 2018 financial report which declared the increasing lease payments that the network contributed to ZOE for the past three years in exchange for operating DZOE-TV (from ₱899.89 or $16.21 million in 2016 to almost a billion pesos in 2018).
On October 10, 2020, ZOE Broadcasting Network signed a partnership agreement with ABS-CBN Corporation after the latter’s shutdown of free television. ZOE TV rebranded itself as A2Z channel, featuring ABS-CBN shows on VHF Channel 11. A month after the launching of the new channel, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) investigated ABS-CBN and ZOE Broadcasting Network to determine if the said block time agreement was processed legally.
Documents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) show that JIL’s three foundations namely Jesus is Lord Colleges Foundation, Inc., Jesus is Lord Church Worldwide Missions Foundation, Inc., and Jesus The Healer Foundation Inc. owns 90% of ZOE, while Villanueva only has a 2.5% stake. However, the general information sheets of these foundations from the SEC show that all these are majority-owned by Villanueva.
Jesus is Lord Colleges Foundation Inc. is a college foundation affiliated with the Jesus is Lord Church Worldwide, a prominent Christian denomination in the Philippines.
Jesus is Lord Church Worldwide Missions Foundation, Inc. was established as the charitable arm of the Jesus Is Lord Church Worldwide.
