The Ang Family

The Ang Family

The Ang Family is the fourth owner of The Manila Times after the EDSA People Power in 1986 that ousted the dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. The patriarch Dante Arevalo acquired The Manila Times from businessman Mark Jimenez, who bought it from the Gokongweis.

Based on the Securities and Exchange Commission, The Manila Times Publishing lists the Ang family as the sole owner with the patriarch Dante Ang, his children Dante Francis “Klink” Ang II, Michael Alexander Ang, Anna Marie Thompson, and Ma. Preciosa Monica Ang each having a 14.29 percent stake.

Dante Arevalo Ang is known in the media industry as a public relations practitioner. His most famous client was Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who became president in 2001. He published the business magazine, Money Asia, and founded the Filipino broadsheet, Kabayan.

Arroyo later appointed Ang chairman of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas from December 2005 until Arroyo’s last day in office in 2010. He was also appointed as a special envoy for international public relations by then-president Rodrigo Duterte.

In April 2019, Dante Ang came out with an exclusive story, a leak from Malacañang, complete with a “matrix” about a plot to oust Duterte led by members of the media including journalists. Members of the media mentioned in the story, which was never substantiated, denounced it as “harassment.”

His son, Klink, currently sits as the President and CEO of The Manila Times Publishing Corporation. He is also the Chairperson of the National Book Development Board (NBDB). He is a recent presidential appointee of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as an Acting Member of the Board of Directors of Clark International Airport Corporation.

Klink’s brother, Michael Alexander Ang is the Chief Financial Officer of The Manila Times Publishing Corporation. He is also part of the National Committee on Communication (NCCom) under the Subcommission on Cultural Dissemination (SCD) as the Vice Head for Print Media (Luzon) of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Aside from his active involvement in media, he is also an Honorary Consul General of Jordan in Manila.
