The Catholic church through the Archdiocese of Manila
The Catholic church, through the Archdiocese of Manila, owns the AM radio station DZRV 846 (Radyo Veritas) and its operator Radio Veritas Global Broadcasting System, Inc.
As the present Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church’s Archdiocese of Manila, Jose F. Cardinal Advincula is assigned the majority shareholder of the broadcast company.
Following a vow of poverty during ordination, Catholic priests are called to live simply and renounce owning property and amassing wealth.
It is by virtue of his position as Archbishop of Manila and as chairman of the company’s Board of Directors that grants Archbishop Advincula the status of caretaker of the majority shares of the media company Radio Veritas Global Broadcasting System.
According to the last government census in 2020, 78% of 108,667,043 Filipinos are Roman Catholics.
Radyo Veritas played a vital part in the country’s history. It was the station the Catholic Church used to urge people to gather on EDSA in February 1986 and protect military officials and soldiers who stood up against President Ferdinand Marcos, paving the way for the People Power revolution.
While the Catholic church has significant influence over its flock, unlike other religious groups, it does not endorse candidates during elections but simply reminds its congregation to choose wisely based on moral and Christian values.
